"How much does an industrial mezzanine cost?" It is often our customers' first question. The honest answer: it depends on your project. A custom mezzanine is calculated for a specific building and use; two mezzanines of the same area can have very different prices. Here are the criteria that affect the budget.
The criteria that determine the price
Area and shape
The larger the area, the higher the total price, but the lower the price per square metre: design, preparation and site set-up costs are spread over a larger area. A simple shape (a rectangle) is also more economical than a complex shape working around obstacles.
Imposed load
This is the most important criterion. A mezzanine for offices (around 250 kg/m²) needs much less steel than a heavy-duty mezzanine designed for 1 or 2 tonnes per square metre. It is therefore essential to define the actual load: neither underestimated (safety) nor overestimated (budget).
Span between columns
Fewer columns means more floor space, but larger beams. A long-span mezzanine costs more per square metre than a tight column grid; on the other hand, it reduces the number of columns, base plates and sometimes concrete pads.
Type of deck
- Timber panels: the most economical solution for everyday storage.
- Grating: lets light and sprinkler water through.
- Steel decking and concrete slab: more expensive, but ideal for heavy loads, acoustic comfort and fire resistance (concrete-floor mezzanine).
Access and equipment
Stairs, guardrails, loading gates, goods lifts, lighting under the mezzanine, fire protection: each item adds to the budget. How many you need depends on the area, the number of occupants and the use.
Site constraints
The capacity of the existing slab (concrete pad foundations may be needed), access to the building, and working on a live site or at night all affect the installation cost.
Costs not to forget
- Procedures: in France, depending on the area created, a prior declaration or a building permit; for a building open to the public, a works authorisation.
- Fire protection that your insurer may require.
- Tax: a mezzanine may change the basis for calculating certain taxes. Read our article on the tax impact of an industrial mezzanine.
Mezzanine or extension: doing the maths
Compared with a building extension, a mezzanine is generally much cheaper and much quicker to install: no structural works, no heavy foundations, a few weeks on site. It also remains dismountable and adaptable.
How do you get an accurate price?
The simplest way is to describe your project to us: area, use, available height, a plan of the building and a few photos. Our engineering office will propose a technical solution and a detailed quote, with no obligation.
