Stockroom, sales or offices: what to do with the mezzanine?

  • Extend the sales floor and create a new department upstairs.
  • Create a stockroom above the sales floor, close to the shelves.
  • Install offices or a break room for your staff.
  • Showcase your products: a mezzanine catches the eye and gives the shop structure.

The rules for an area open to the public

If your customers have access to the mezzanine, it must comply with the rules for buildings open to the public: fire safety, number and width of stairs, accessibility for people with reduced mobility and works authorisation. Everything is explained on our public-access mezzanine page. A stockroom closed to the public remains subject to workplace safety rules and standards.

A discreet, elegant structure

Our hot-rolled sections allow spans of up to 18 m and need no vertical bracing: few columns and an open sales area. Glass guardrails, designer staircase, clad underside, concrete deck for acoustic comfort: the mezzanine fits in with your concept.

Your questions

FAQ: retail mezzanine

Do you need permission to create offices on a mezzanine?

Creating offices increases the floor area: in France, depending on the area created and the local planning rules, a prior declaration or a building permit may be required. We supply the technical documents for the application (drawings, structural calculations).

What are the procedures for a mezzanine in a building open to the public?

In France, any fit-out of a building open to the public requires a works authorisation, filed with the town hall and reviewed by the safety and accessibility commission. We supply the drawings and structural calculations needed for the application.

How can a public-access mezzanine be made accessible to people with reduced mobility?

Depending on the configuration, accessibility is provided by a lift, a platform lift or a ramp. Stairs are fitted with handrails, risers and contrasting stair nosings. This equipment is built in from the design stage.

Does the shop have to close while the mezzanine is installed?

Not always. The works can be phased or carried out outside opening hours. Manufacturing in our workshop reduces the time spent on site.
